RedMed, the University Employee Health Clinic, is located on the ground floor of the A. Ray Olpin Student Union Building located at 200 S, Central Campus Dr, Salt Lake City, UT 84112. Care at the clinic is provided by College of Nursing Faculty & Staff. Our Nurse Practitioners and staff bring clinical expertise in individualized patient care, by assessing and treating work related injuries and other non-emergency medical conditions.

Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses

Employees who are injured at work should use the clinic as their first point of care unless the injury is life- or limb-threatening or occurs after RedMed Clinic hours, in which case the employee should be taken to the nearest emergency room. Additional information about work-related injuries and illnesses is available on the University Human Resource Management Workers Compensation web page. Employees and their supervisors should complete a First Report of Injury form prior to visiting the clinic. For assistance in completing the form, contact UHRM at (801) 581-7447 and ask to speak to a Leave of Absence Representative.

The clinic offers a variety of medical services at no cost for University employees, including:

Treatment will be documented in University of Utah Health medical records system (EPIC), which will enable other University of Utah Health providers to have access to notes about your symptoms, diagnosis, lab results and any medications prescribed.

The RedMed clinic currently only treats University employees (including Academic Health Sciences employees). In the future we hope to expand our space and services so that we can also treat family members.

In addition to RedMed, employees enrolled in the University's Employee Health Care Plan also have no-cost access to the Employee Assistance Program for mental health needs and treatment of substance abuse and other addictions.

Services Not Available

Employees with the following should not seek care at RedMed and should instead go to the nearest emergency room:

Signs of heart attack, including severe chest pain lasting longer than two minutes
Signs of stroke, including loss of vision, sudden numbness, weakness, slurred speech or confusion
Compound fracture (bone protrudes through skin)
Convulsions, seizures or loss of consciousness
Deep knife wounds or gunshot wounds
Heavy, uncontrollable bleeding
Poisoning
Pregnancy-related problems
Radiological exams (X-ray, ultrasound, etc.)
Serious head, neck or back injury
Severe abdominal pain
Severe burns
Severe chest pain or difficulty breathing
Suicidal or homicidal feelings
Temperature of 103° or greater
Tests requiring microscopy

Tyson Brinkerhoff, PMHNP

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Tyson Brinkerhoff, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and a graduate of The Ohio State University. He provides comprehensive, patient-centered care that integrates medication management with thoughtful exploration of the biological factors contributing to mental health symptoms. His approach is holistic, incorporating both traditional pharmacologic treatments and evidence-informed natural approaches when appropriate. Tyson is affiliated with the University of Utah College of Nursing, where he contributes to clinical care through the Red Med Clinic, supporting the mental health and wellness needs of university employees. He also practices at the Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake, providing culturally informed psychiatric services to American Indian and Alaska Native communities. His clinical experience includes the delivery of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Spravato (esketamine) therapy for treatment-resistant conditions. Prior to becoming an advanced practice nurse, Tyson gained diverse healthcare experience, in diverse settings. This breadth of experience informs his comprehensive, individualized approach to behavioral healthcare, recognizing the complex and unique paths that shape each patient’s mental health journey.

Katie grew up in Madison, WI and moved to Utah in 2001 to attend the University of Utah. After earning undergraduate degrees in both Economics and Political Science, she worked in the legal field for a period of 7 years. Katie returned to school at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, earning her MSN in 2014. In 2016, Katie earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Utah. Since that time, she has worked in a variety of primary care and employee health settings. Katie is passionate about solving medical problems together with her patients. When not working, Katie enjoys spending time with family in the great outdoors.

Brooke is a compassionate and dedicated Certified Medical Assistant currently working at RedMed Employee Health Clinic, where she enjoys supporting employees’ health and well-being with care and efficiency. She previously gained valuable experience at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, working closely with teams to help patients through their rehabilitation journey. Brooke also has a background in specialized wound care and healthcare resource support from her time at the University of Utah. She truly values building trusting relationships with patients and colleagues alike, always striving to make every visit as comfortable and smooth as possible.

Medical Assistant

Kati Medel began her medical career in 2016 at St. Marks as a Medical Assistant. She was quickly promoted to Lead Medical Assistant for a popular Internal Medicine provider. Kati advanced her skills and experience by moving to a private family practice clinic, where she received her phlebotomy certification and was trained to perform DEXA scans. Due to her compassionate patient care and proficiency, the clinic’s volume of DEXA scans dramatically increased, and Kati took on the responsibility of managing the department. In July 2024, Kati joined the team at RedMed, which she thoroughly enjoys. She brings decades of experience with quality and thoughtful care from her background in customer/patient service and as an education specialist, as well as from her personal experience caring for individuals with chronic illnesses requiring attentive care. Kati is passionate about supporting the team and is dedicated to ensuring that everyone who comes through the clinic doors leaves feeling better than when they arrived. She is also a certified Krav Maga instructor and actively participates in Self Defense Seminars. In her spare time, you'll find her participating in activities with her children, camping, riding motorcycles, and jumping out of airplanes.

Rachel Sharp is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with the University of Utah College of Nursing. Rachel is a Salt Lake City native and obtained her BSN at the University of Utah in 2017. She graduated with her MSN, FNP from Saint Louis University in 2022. Rachel has 9 years of nursing experience in Adult Medical ICU, Newborn ICU, Cardiology, and Family Practice. Special interests include Family Practice, Urgent Care, Women's Health, Cardiology, Wellness, and patient education & empowerment. Rachel currently works as an NP at RedMed Employee Health Clinic and Utah Juvenile Justice Youth Services. In her free time, she loves to spend time outdoors with her husband, their son, and their dog Leo. She strives to promote teamwork, shared goals, patient education, and patient-centered care to achieve optimal health for her patients.

Josh Twitchell grew up both in St. George and Salt Lake City Utah. He attended the University of Utah from 2011-2020. He has 8 years of nursing experience across different U of U departments. As an Nurse Practitioner, he has had experience in Palliative Care and completed a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Huntsman. He is now working with the College of Nursing in their Faculty Practice which in includes: RedMed, Summit County Health Dept, Urban Indian Center, and Juvenile Justice Youth Services. Josh is passionate about solving medical problems with his patients and educating his patients. His professional interests include: family medicine, urgent care, neurology, education, and working with underserved populations. When not caring for patients, Josh enjoys hiking, biking, running, camping, boating, golfing, and traveling; but more than anything spending time with his wife, puppy (Norepinephrine), and family.

Morgan is originally from Castle Dale, Utah, but spent the majority of her childhood and early adult life in Price, Utah. She started her venture into the Medical field in 2017 when she applied to a phlebotomy school in Murray, Utah and made the move from rural Price to the big city. From there, she worked as a phlebotomist and part-time medical assistant for a family practice in Holladay before switching to work full-time as a Medical Assistant/Practice Manager for an employer-based clinic in Downtown SLC. In January of 2023, Morgan started with the RedMed Clinic as it’s new Patient Services Coordinator. Morgan earned her B.S. from Utah State University in December of 2023 and is now working on earning her MBA at the David Eccles School of Business. When she isn't at the RedMed Clinic, you can find Morgan with her nose in a book or playing with her adorable, but very sassy, 4-year old daughter.

Nurse Practitioner

Lyndsay Wixom, DNP, FNP-C, is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner at the University of Utah. She works with the College of Nursing in their Faculty Practice which includes RedMed Campus Employee Health, Summit County Health Department, Urban Indian Health Center, and Juvenile Justice Youth Services. Lyndsay has 12 years of nursing experience and earned an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science and Nursing degree from the University of Utah. As a Registered Nurse, she worked in oncology, medical/surgical, acute care, and assisted living patients with dementia/Alzheimer’s. She received her Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2020 from the University of Utah. Lyndsay is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and Utah Nurse Practitioners. Lyndsay’s professional interests include family medicine, women’s health, mental health, and urgent care. When she is not caring for patients, she can be found reading, running, walking, hiking, snowboarding, gardening, cooking, making sourdough babies, and spending all the time she can with her husband and two children.
