Group Life Insurance is offered for University employees through The Standard. The University provides Plan 1A coverage for employees in benefit-eligible positions in an amount equal to their pay up to $25,000. Additional coverage is available at the employee’s cost.
University-Provided Plan Insurance - All Employees in Benefit-eligible Positions

Elective Coverage
- Basic Employee Life
- Life insurance on the employee’s life in an amount equal to the University-provided coverage.
- Employee Additional Term Life
- Coverage in the amount of $20,000 up to $500,000 (or 5 times annual salary up to $1,000,000) in increments of $5,000.
- Premiums are based on age and tobacco use.
- Basic Family Life
- Life insurance in the amount of $2,000 on the employee’s spouse or domestic partner, and each unmarried dependent child under the age of 26.
- Spouse or Domestic Partner Additional Term Life
- Coverage on the employee’s spouse or domestic partner in the amount of $20,000 up to a maximum of $250,000 (in increments of $5,000).
- Premiums are based on age and tobacco use.
- Child Additional Life
- Coverage on each of the employee’s dependent children under age 26 in the amount of $5,000 or $10,000.
- Monthly premium is $0.45 for $5,000 in coverage or $0.90 for $10,000 in coverage.
Travel insurance is included in the University-provided life insurance coverage for all employees in benefit-eligible positions.
- Select at least one primary beneficiary and at least one contingent beneficiary for each insurance. Employees are automatically the primary beneficiary of life insurance on their spouse or domestic partner and children.
- Change beneficiaries at any time through UBenefits.
- Initial Enrollment Period – newly eligible employees may enroll through UBenefits during their first 90 days following date of hire
- Coverage begins the day after you enroll.
- Employees may enroll in Basic Employee Life, Basic Family Life, Employee Additional Life up to $500,000, and Spouse or Domestic Partner Additional Life up to $50,000 with guaranteed issue (no proof of good health is required). See Other Enrollment below to apply for additional amounts of coverage by providing proof of good health.
- Open Enrollment – employees may enroll in Basic Employee Life and Basic Family Life during open enrollment. Coverage is effective on the following July 1st, the first day of the new plan year. Employees may also increase their Employee and Spouse or Domestic Partner additional life insurance up to $20,000 or to the guaranteed issue maximum ($500,000 for Employee and $250,000 for Spouse or Domestic Partner), whichever is less.
- Status Change Event – enroll through UBenefits within 90 days of the date of the event.
- Employees who marry or newly qualify as a domestic partnership may enroll in Basic Employee Life, Basic Family Life and Spouse or Domestic Partner Additional Life up to $50,000 with guaranteed issue.
- Employees who add a child through birth, adoption, foster care, or legal guardianship may enroll in Basic Employee Life, Basic Family Life, and Child Additional Life with guaranteed issue (no proof of good health is required).
- Other Enrollment
- To enroll in Employee and/or Spouse or Domestic Partner Additional Term Life after your Initial Enrollment Period or for additional amounts, complete the underwriting application.
If you are leaving the University and would like to continue your life insurance coverage through an individual policy, you may be eligible for portability or conversion of your current coverage. You must apply within 60 days of your last day of work.
