Retirement Plans Annual Notice
The University of Utah provides employees with the opportunity to save for retirement through the 403(b) Tax-Deferred Annuity Plan and the 457(b) Plan. All employees who receive compensation through the University’s payroll system are eligible to participate, regardless of their eligibility for other University benefits.
Employees may enroll in these plans or change their contribution amounts through UBenefits.
Effective January 1, 2026, the IRS maximum contribution limits will increase.
The limits that apply to the 403(b) and 457(b) Plans are as follows:
Employees may contribute up to the IRS maximum to each plan. The Age 50 Catch-up is available to employees who will be age 50 on or before December 31, 2026. The Age 60-63 Super Catch-up is available to employees who will be age 60, 61, 62 or 63 on December 31, 2026.
Additional information is available on the UHRM website at benefits.utah.edu/retirement.
Beginning in 2026, IRS rules require that employees who earned $150,000 or more during 2025 must make any catch-up contributions as after-tax Roth contributions. Once W-2s are finalized in January, UHRM will notify employees who are subject to this requirement. For these employees, the University’s system will automatically convert pre-tax contributions to Roth contributions once the basic contribution limit has been reached.
*Please note that contributions made to other employers' 401(k) or 403(b) plans (such as the VA’s TSP plan) count toward your maximum contribution limit for the University’s 403(b) Plan.
