Moving From a Country with Health Care Coverage
If you move from a country where you had health care coverage, you may be eligible to enroll in University benefits.
What This Event Means
Use this event if you lose access to health coverage due to relocating from another country.
This is processed using the Loss of Other Coverage event in UBenefits.
Common Situations
- Moving to the United States from another country
- Returning to the U.S. after living abroad
- Losing access to government-provided health care
Examples of Countries
- Canada
- United Kingdom
- Other countries with national or government health systems
What Must Be True
To qualify:
- You had health coverage in another country
- You no longer have access to that coverage
- The move results in a loss of coverage
When to Act
You must complete your changes within 30 days of losing coverage or relocating.
Timing Rules (Important)
- You cannot submit this event before your coverage ends
- Enter the first day you are without coverage
- Submit within 30 days after the loss of coverage
How to Update
- Log in to UBenefits
- Select Change Your Benefits
- Choose Loss of Other Coverage
- Enter the first day without coverage
- Add yourself and/or eligible dependents
- Select your coverage
- Review and submit
Entering the Correct Date
Example:
- Coverage ends: 10/31
- Enter: 11/01
Documentation Required
If you haven’t done so already, send documentation to AskHR@utah.edu.
Examples of Acceptable Documentation
- Proof of prior health coverage
- Documentation showing loss of coverage
- Relocation or travel documentation (if applicable)
What Qualifies as Proof?
Your documentation must:
- Be from an official source
- Clearly show:
- Name of covered individual(s)
- Coverage details
- Date coverage ended or access was lost
What to Expect
After you submit your changes:
- You will receive a confirmation email
- Updates will appear in UBenefits the next day
- Coverage will be terminated accordingly
