Loss of Other Coverage
You can enroll in University benefits if you or your Qualified Family Member lose other health coverage.
What This Event Means
Use this event when you lose existing health coverage and need to enroll in University benefits.
This is typically used when you previously had coverage elsewhere and now need to transition onto a University plan.
Common Situations
Use this event if you experience:
- Loss of your own employer-sponsored coverage
- Loss of coverage through a spouse or domestic partner
- Divorce or separation resulting in loss of coverage
- Loss of Medicaid or other government-sponsored coverage
- Turning age 26 and losing coverage under a parent’s plan
What “Involuntary Loss” Means
The loss of coverage must be involuntary — meaning it was not your choice.
Qualifies
- Job ended or hours reduced
- Employer no longer offers coverage
- You are removed from someone else’s plan
- You no longer meet eligibility requirements
Does NOT Qualify
- You canceled coverage by choice
- You chose not to pay premiums
- You voluntarily dropped coverage
If the loss is voluntary, you must wait for Open Enrollment.
When to Act
You must complete your enrollment within 30 days of the date your coverage ends.
Timing Rules (Important)
- You cannot submit this event before your coverage ends
- You must enter the first day you are without coverage
- You must complete your enrollment within 30 days after the loss
How to Update
- Log in to UBenefits
- Select Change Your Benefits
- Choose Loss of Other Coverage
- Enter the first day you are without coverage
- Add yourself and any eligible family members
- Select your benefit elections (medical, dental, etc.)
- Review all selections carefully
- Submit your elections
Entering the Correct Date (CRITICAL)
You must enter the first day you no longer have coverage.
Example
- Previous coverage ends: 10/31
- Enter in system: 11/01
Why This Matters
Entering the wrong date can:
- Create a gap in coverage
- Delay your enrollment
- Cause incorrect payroll deductions
Documentation Required
If you haven’t done so already, send documentation to AskHR@utah.edu.
Examples of Acceptable Documentation
- Letter of Creditable Coverage
- Termination notice from employer or insurance carrier
What Qualifies as Proof?
Your documentation must:
- Be from an official source
- Clearly show:
- Name of covered individual(s)
- Type of coverage
- Last day of coverage
This date must align with the date you enter in UBenefits.
What to Expect
After you submit your changes:
- You will receive a confirmation email
- Updates will appear in UBenefits the next day
- Your enrollment is sent for processing
Weekly File Timing
Files are sent every Monday
Submissions after Monday will be processed the following week.
