Gain of Other Coverage
You can reduce or cancel your University benefits if you gain other health coverage.
What This Event Means
Use this event when you become covered under another health plan and no longer need your University benefits.
This event is used to remove yourself or a dependent from coverage.
Common Situations
Use this event if:
- You start a new job and enroll in that employer’s plan
- Your spouse or domestic partner adds you to their plan
- A dependent becomes eligible under another plan
When to Use This Event
Use this event only after:
- Your new coverage has started, or
- You have confirmed the effective date of coverage
Do not cancel your University coverage until your new coverage is active.
When to Act
You must complete your changes within 30 days of the new coverage start date.
Timing Rules (Important)
- You cannot submit this event before your new coverage begins
- You must enter the first day your new coverage is active
- You must complete your changes within 30 days after that date
How to Update
- Log in to UBenefits
- Select Change Your Benefits
- Choose Gain of Other Coverage
- Enter the effective date of the new coverage
- Remove yourself and/or dependents from coverage
- Review your elections carefully
- Submit your changes
Entering the Correct Date (CRITICAL)
You must enter the first day your new coverage begins.
Example
- New coverage starts: 11/01
- Enter in system: 11/01
Why This Matters
Entering the wrong date may:
- Cause overlapping coverage
- Result in paying for two plans at once
- Delay termination of your University coverage

If you haven’t done so already, send documentation to AskHR@utah.edu.
Examples of Acceptable Documentation
- Enrollment confirmation from new employer or plan
- Letter of Creditable Coverage
What Qualifies as Proof?
Your documentation must:
- Be from an official source
- Clearly show:
- Name of covered individual(s)
- Type of coverage
- Effective date of new coverage
This date must match what you enter in UBenefits.
Important
If a Qualified Family Member is no longer eligible for coverage, you must take action immediately — even if you are outside the 30-day window.
