Remove a Spouse (Divorce)
If you are divorced, your ex-spouse — and any stepchildren covered under your plan — are no longer eligible for benefits and must be removed.
What This Event Means
Use this event when your divorce is finalized and your spouse is no longer eligible for coverage.
Coverage cannot continue after the divorce is final, even if you wish to keep them on your plan.
Removing a Spouse and Stepchildren
When your divorce is finalized, you must remove:
- Your ex-spouse
- Any stepchildren covered under your plan
These removals are completed as part of the same Divorce event.
Why Stepchildren Must Be Removed
Stepchildren are only eligible while you are married to their parent.
Once the divorce is finalized:
- Their eligibility ends immediately
- Coverage cannot continue under your plan
Exception — When a Child May Still Be Eligible
A child may still qualify for coverage if:
- You have legal guardianship, or
- You have adopted the child
If this applies, do not remove the child yet.

When to Act
You must complete your changes within 30 days of the finalized divorce date.
Timing Rules (Important)
- You cannot submit this event before the divorce is finalized
- Enter the finalized divorce date
- Submit within 30 days after that date
How to Update
- Log in to UBenefits
- Select Change Your Benefits
- Choose Divorce
- Enter the finalized divorce date
- Remove your spouse
- Remove stepchildren (if no longer eligible)
- Review your coverage elections
- Submit your changes
Entering the Correct Date (CRITICAL)
Enter the date your divorce is finalized (not the separation date).
Documentation Required
If you haven’t done so already, please send documentation to AskHR@utah.edu.
Acceptable documentation:
- Divorce decree (first page + signature page)
Must clearly show:
- Names of both parties
- Finalized divorce date
What to Expect
- Confirmation email sent to your UMail
- Updates visible in UBenefits the next day
- Changes sent to the health plan administrator
